Waunakee is a Public Power community.
Waunakee Utilities is a locally owned and operated electric, water and wastewater utility, serving 6,000 customers in and around the Village of Waunakee.
At Waunakee Utilities our mission is simple and straight forward - We are here to provide low-cost, reliable electric and water service with a hometown, personal touch.
Afterall, we are your friends and neighbors who share your values and understand your needs. That’s what makes a local, community-owned utility a valuable asset to citizens and the community.
According the official minutes of the Village of Waunakee Town Record, September 7, 1915 -
“The voters of the Village of Waunakee voted for an electrical lighting plant for the Village of Waunakee at the last spring election. Therefore be it.”
In September, 1915 the Waunakee Village board authorized the borrowing of $5,000 and entered into a contract with the Wisconsin River Power Company to furnish electric power to resident of the village. Bids were let to build the electrical system and - therefore be it - a new utility was in business.
Waunakee Utilities has gone through a lot of change over the years, including several name changes, changes in personnel, changes in technology, and changes in the electric industry. But one thing remains constant – our strong and sincere commitment to the people of Waunakee to provide the best possible services at the lowest possible cost.
